Weight Gain Diet For Guinea Pig 🐷

Guinea pigs are very special pets to have. They are sensitive, curious, and fun-loving. These are the reasons why they are known as pocket pets.

They always need a lot of attention from their owner because that is what makes them happy. Sometimes, it may get difficult for you to give your guinea pig enough time due to work or any other engagements in life.

If you think you can’t handle both- work and guinea pig, then it might be better if you hire someone who will take care of your pet while you are away.

Here are 10 tips on how to make sure that your pet remains healthy while you’re not present:

Make sure that your guinea pig has a good diet. Guinea pigs have sensitive digestive systems, so what they eat is very important.

A diet consisting of lots of hay and vegetables is best for them as it aids in the digestion process.Β  Also, avoid feeding your guinea pig too many treats because that can lead to obesity or malnutrition.

Also, make sure you wash all veggies before giving them to your pet because chemicals might harm him/her.

Good veggies for this purpose are carrots, celery, romaine lettuce and a small number of dandelion leaves.

Bad veggies:

Beans and cauliflower should be strictly avoided as they contain a toxin called goitrogen which affects the thyroid gland by decreasing its production of necessary hormones to maintain a healthy weight.

Exercise

2) Another important factor is exercise. Guinea pigs, especially if they are kept in a small cage, need exercise to stay healthy and fit. Make sure you provide your pet with an adequately sized cage because a large area will make it more active and playful.Β

Exercising also helps them to get rid of stress or boredom that can lead to various health problems such as obesity and even death in some cases.

3) The sex of the guinea pig matters when keeping one for a very long time (more than 5 years). This is because female guinea pigs live longer than the males do on average by 1-2 years. So, if you want your guinea pig to serve you for a long period of time, then opt for a female one.

When caring for your guinea pig it is also important that you handle him/her daily so that they get used to people and are not scared.

If the pet doesn’t trust you, then he/she can harm you when you try to handle them by nipping or biting because they sense your fear. So, if possible, keep an eye on your pet all the time while working in the home because they might need you.

4)Β  Make sure that your guinea pig lives in a healthy living environment which consists of a large cage with plenty of bedding material (wood shavings or hay), water supply, deep bowl for food and toys like tubes or balls to play around with.

This will make your pet comfortable and happy.Β  Also, make sure that you clean the cage at least once a week and refill all supplies like food and bedding to keep your pet healthy.

5) All animals- not just guinea pigs – need regular medical checkups to stay healthy. If possible, take your pet along with you when visiting the vet because most vets will want to see how it behaves around other humans as well as pets such as cats or dogs.

Make sure you choose a good veterinarian who will help you in making your pet live long and healthy by giving it regular checkups and timely vaccinations for common diseases such as respiratory infections or flu which can lead to death if not treated on time.

Caring for your pet sometimes involves spoiling it too. So, make sure you give your guinea pig some small treats like fruits (apples, pears), chocolates (in very small quantities) or yogurt drops which can be bought from stores that sell animal food.Β

Make sure you only give them a little amount of these non-vegetarian items because they can cause diarrhea and other health problems if given in excess.

When you plan to take your pet with you on a long journey by road or air, make sure it is well fed and rested the night before so that there are no accidents due to tiredness while traveling.

Also, keep toys with you for entertainment because it will help him/her stay stress-free and comfortable which is important for an animal’s health.

Guinea pigs require a lot of attention and care to stay healthy, so if you can’t give them that much then maybe consider adopting or buying two instead of just one as they will keep each other company as well as play around with each other.

This way both of them will be happy and won’t feel lonely because loneliness can lead to depression in animals – a condition that can make your pet very weak and unhealthy over a period of time.Β

Also, make sure the place where you reside has a moderate temperature during the summer and winter seasons because too hot or cold temperatures are bad for their health.
